Our very good friends have had a bar here on the island for all their lives. It was their father's before them and his father before him.
Unfortunately this year takings are down considerably, estimated about 50% on last year. Why? The tourists are still here.
The reason being that the hotels are doing their damnedest to keep their clients in the hotels. Apparently they are even offering full board to half board visitors for a reduced rate.
This means that at night when everyone is out strolling they are only stopping for a drink or two. The meals they have already had in the hotel.
Very, very sad and very short sighted. After all if the bars close through lack of business what is left? Hotels and gift shops only. If people come to visit Mallorca and only have the hotels to stay in and nowhere to wander to at night then how many of them are going to say let's go somewhere else next year. This will therefore affect the hotel trade too.
Work together you lot - you both need one another.
